Preventing Coronavirus & What To Do If You Think You Have It

Festival Season 2020 is off to a rocky start with huge names such as Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland closing their doors. Coronavirus is on everyone’s mind and the EDM Community is no exception. In fact, a recent poll showed that 72 percent of festival goers are scared to attend festivals in the next few months.

Prevention of Coronavirus

We interviewed Bindiya Gandhi MD, a Board Certified Functional Medicine and Integrative Medicine doctor about this virus and she was kind enough to share some insight with us.

Dr. Bindiya stated that “Besides the obvious, washing hands and not exposing yourself to sick people, you should:

  • Decrease your stress load and learn how to manage it better.
  • Get good quality sleep of at least 7-8 hours per night.
  • Eat lots of veggies rich in antioxidants; the more colorful the better.
  • Avoid alcohol as it suppresses the immune system.
  • Keep your immune system happy – Take a multivitamins, Vitamin C for prevention, and Vitamin D if you’re deficient.
  • Avoid foods that you are sensitive to – dairy is a common mucuogenic food.
  • Keep your gut healthy with a probiotic & fermented foods like Kombucha, kefir, and sauerkraut.

Do You Have Coronavirus?

Symptoms of infection with Coronavirus include fevers, shortness of breath, and cough. The most important thing to figure out is if you have had exposure to someone who has been traveling.

I Think I Might Be Infected

Dr. Bindiya says that if you think you might have Coronavirus, you should go to the Health Department and get tested. Your local primary care physician and urgent care does not have the test available yet.

Should I Wear a Mask?

A mask does not prevent you from getting sick, but it will help decrease the spread of germs. Standard masks are not airtight, therefore virus can get in. However they do help prevent face-touching, which is often how the virus is introduced. “Only people who are sick should wear masks” – Dr. Bindiya

Should You Avoid Music Festivals Right Now?

Listen, don’t stop your life because you’re afraid of getting the virus. Just be smart, and cautious. Wash your hands, take sanitizer with you. If you’re not feeling 100% don’t go. If you have a compromised immune system, older than 60,  have a lot of medical problems, on a lot of medications, have a history of cancers, autoimmune issues etc don’t go. Use common sense. Decrease your risk of getting the virus if you can.
